Repeated jumps versus single jumps

Elastic jumps or strength jumps?

speed jumpsBondarchuk in his Transfer of Training in Sport highlights research from Eastern Europe that shows that performing repeated jumps is more effective in improving sporting performance than doing single jumps for distance.

Working on this principle with a group of Athletes last week a couple of things need to be in place: Balance and strength.

Without both of these, the jumps will be ineffective. The athletes who have been working with me for a year, have enough of both to do repeated hops rapidly over 15 metres.

I am not an advocate of the “you must squat 2x bodyweight before you do pliometrics” school of thought. I prefer observation and common sense and developing the athletes’ ability to produce power rapidly and with various cues from the start.

Strength, power, balance and application in the sporting environment must be worked on in conjunction with each other.

Client Testimonials

South WestFencing Hub
Working with James has been a pleasure and education for all of the fencers and coaches, from beginner fencers and trainee fencers, up to international fencers and coaches with decades of experience. We really appreciate James' desire to challenge assumptions but simultaneously his ability to listen to both fencers and coaches on technical and tactical points. He manages to keep his sessions fresh and innovative without losing sight of our central goals. His sessions are challenging and fun and his attention detail is a tribute to his professionalism. Thank you.
