FAQ
I am often asked questions from athletes who want to get stronger, learn how to run faster or want to jump higher but are uncertain how to start. Here are some answers to the most common questions.
Q: “How can I get stronger in my spare time?”
A: The Get Stronger programme will include fortnightly plans that fit around your work\ school and playing schedule.
Q: “How do I get stronger without getting bigger?”
A: This is especially important for combat sports and female athletes. If that is your concern, then the programme can use exericises and techniques that enhance the efficiency of your movement to get you stronger. In conjunction with the correct diet, you body composition will improve so that your size will stay the same, but you are stronger.(Female athletes can read more here in this Free ebook)
Q: “My gym hasn’t got the right equipment to do Olympic Lifts: how can I get more powerful?
A: Olympic lifts are a great tool for developing power, but they are only one tool. If you have that facility then you will get coaching on those lifts if that fits your goal. If not, then we will give you alternatives that you can use.
Q: “I have been training for a long time and I have stopped getting stronger; can you help?”
A: Yes! Every athlete goes through periods of stagnation or a reaches a plateau. The Get Stronger programme will help revitalise your training by looking at your history and offering new stimuli to create an adaptation.

Jump Higher
Q: “How can I increase my vertical?”
A: A combination of improved strength, timing and technique. The Jump Higher programme trains all 3 aspects through body weight exercises, dumbbell exercises and jumps practice.
Q: “What are pliometrics?”
A: Pliometrics are a form of training that use the elasticity of the muscles and tendons to produce more power.
Q: “Why am I learning to jump higher when I never have to jump in the game?
A: Vertical jump ability is also linked to acceleration speed over 10 metres. The Jump Higher programme will help your initial acceleration and therefore your game.
Q: “My knees hurt every time I do this type of training; will it make them worse?”
A: Without seeing you in person, we can’t answer that. The programme includes a musculo skeletal screening with knee expert physiotherapist Sarah Marshall.
Providing you have no underlying problems, the programme will include exercises to enhance knee strength and stability. Most sports require a single leg take off and you need to be able to apply your jumping ability when it counts, without getting injured.

Q: “My coach has told me that I will never get faster is that true?”
A: NO. We fundamentally disagree with this statement. We believe in coaching you to get faster, not putting you down. You will never be the fastest, but you can definitely get faster.
Q: “I have been doing speed sessions at my club and I don’t seem to get faster, why is that?”
A: Without seeing your sessions, it is difficulty to say. Often “speed” sessions are just repeated sprints where you get tired. The speed is run out of you. The Get Faster programme looks at making your running technique more efficient and more robust so that not only can you run faster, but you can sustain it for longer.
Q: “I am a middle distance runner, do I need to do speed training?
A: We have helped 800m -5km runners and Modern Pentathletes improve the running part of their event through the Get Faster programme. Whilst acceleration is not as important, the ability to run economically and efficiciently is. “mileage means medals” is not really applicable for the amateur athlete. This means training smarter rather than harder.
Q: “Will weight training make me faster”
A: The correct weight training programme will. This depends on your existing level of strength. Once we have checked your posture, balance stability and mobility we can give you the right advice. The specific weights exercises we give you will enhance your running technique, rather than inhibit it.

Client Testimonials

I have been working with James since September 2009, with a history of becoming injured in winter months our main goal was to over come this and help my core/hip area to become more stable thus enabling me to run at my full potential. Not only have I made it through the winter months without gaining the usual knee injuries I have also improved my performance to currently become one of the top ranked athletes.
