Planning and Methods of Physical Preparation for Combat Sports- Mike Favre, Uksca conference

Mike Favre works at the University of Michigan, and delivered this lecture on combat sports preparation, specifically looking at wrestling and judo.

Having some considerable experience and knowledge in this area, I went along not expecting much, but open to some different perspectives.

Favre presented a four year plan, a year plan and individual workouts with some video clips of some exercises.  However, the slides and presentations of the plans was unreadable, so we couldn’t see how things were sequenced or structured.

He stated that the coaches bought into the yearly plan and that the sequencing of workouts was stuck to throughout the year.  He didn’t have a method of quantifying the intensity of the fight workouts. As anyone knows, 60 minutes of grappling or wrestling or groundwork is very tough, and this will definitely have an impact on the power or speed session that follows.

Favre did present some targets for different lifts that he has with his fighters. he said that this correlated well with their fight performance too (Dan Baker’s research in rugby league would support this methodology).

Some of the information in this lecture may have been useful, but there was too much general overview, not enough specificity.
