Work Capacity- Lunge walks

Whilst not being a strict training principle, there is a need to develop a work capacity in conjunction with the four pillars of balance, flexibility, strength and posture.

The capacity to perform exercises that develop your physical attributes, or the capacity to sustain work rates within training sessions will help you become better at your sport.

A lot of young athletes do a lot of “games playing” but not much structured physical activity. This results in early onset of fatigue and overuse injuries of one limb or movement type.  They plateau quite early on.

I have recently had 2 groups of athletes work through some lunge walks that targeted 3 of the 4 pillars and also work capacity. The “killer” lunge walk and the “destroyer” lunge walk have been remarkably well done and taken. The next stage is the “Decimator” lunge walk as suggested by one of the athletes.

The plan is to then transfer some of this work capacity into more types of running/ skipping and jumping activities with higher volumes.
